Blue and Silver Wedding Cake

I was asked to do a wedding cake for a couple that were moving into our congregation.  I knew family on both the groom and bride's sides.  Realistically, with two birthdays a week before Christmas, Christmas, my 10 year wedding anniversary, being the day before my birthday and being six months pregnant, it probably was not the best time to be working on a wedding cake.  But, doing something like this simultaneously terrifies and exhilarates me.  However, with my 4th coming soon, a husband finishing a PhD & heading back into medical school rotations, it will be looooooonnnngggg time before I have the energy to do it again!

It's definitely addicting though, not gonna lie. :)  Especially when the bride was as easy to work with and to please as this sweet girl was! I'm glad she was happy with how it turned out, I was, too!

She gave me several pictures and she wanted some detail from each to make up the vision for her cake.  The top was an 8" triple chocolate cake and the bottom was a 12" foam tier. There was scroll work and silver ribbon with a blue & white flower accent on the side.  I had never seen that willow tree design before and thought it was not only gorgeous, but perfect for the top of the cake!

Since I'm attracted to simple elegance and wasn't sure which way I'd personally prefer, I took some pictures before I embellished the scroll work.  My camera skills are improving, but still have a long way to go. I wish I'd taken more close-ups, but I did my best to photoshop the pictures to capture the comparisons.  Honestly, I don't know that I can decide which one I like better...

Last one, apparently, I missed this angle before embellishment, so no comparison.

Birthday Balloons Cake

My husband and baby have the same birthday! Which makes it a little tricky to come up with a dual birthday cake.  It needed to be whimsical enough for a two year old but sophisticated enough for a grown man.  Here's what I came up with.  I would have preferred much smaller balloons but this is what I had at home, so it would have to do! The balloons were definitely a big hit (and a big temptation!) with all my boys.

Anniversary Cake

I made my sister's wedding cake last October.  This year, on their exact anniversary, she and her sweet husband were sealed in the Oakland, CA LDS Temple. I was helping decorate a small reception afterward and also handling food in the kitchen, so this cake was literally put together in less than 10 minutes.  But honestly, even a 'quick and dirty' frosting job looks delicious when you have a white cake with raspberry filling and lemon curd Italian Meringue Buttercream.  The gorgeous blue cake plate was a wedding present they received just the day before the sealing and went perfectly with her blue and pink color scheme!

Hope

I had the privilege to meet a girl that was staying in my area to recover from depression.  She was so sweet and had the best attitude, I was thoroughly impressed.  We had the opportunity to spend some time together.  By the time she was ready to go, it was time to celebrate! She asked me to help her get a cake (as it was a bit of a tradition that the people leaving get a cake to celebrate with everyone on their floor).  I said, how about we MAKE a cake!  So I made the cake to save time and together we picked colors and decided how to decorate.  I piped dots and she smoothed them down.  And she did the darling topper, "Hope," which was the name for her group. The story behind it makes this one of my favorite cakes.  Life can throw us some pretty difficult trials, BUT thanks to our Savior Jesus Christ, there is always Hope.
